Facebook and Your information.

I’m one of the last people, to argue about privacy online.  I have set all of my settings on Facebook to public and have no qualm about it. I even have a website dedicated to give you access to all of my social media accounts in, www.ColeWatts.com.

Privacy is not an issue with me, so when I read that Facebook was in the midst of launching a whole slew of new buttons, I was intrigued by how Facebook was making it easier for us to give them our information.

Now, with a simple click of a button one can tell all their friends what they like, read, listen, and watch on Facebook. With these new buttons, Facebook is officially becoming the sole owner of our information online.  Not only will you be telling your friends what you’re doing at any given time, but you will also be telling Facebook this.

By making our lives easier, Facebook is getting more and more information from us. Have you seen the new lists feature yet? By easily creating lists for us, based on location, schools, and past job experience Facebook is grouping us together and thus creating more information about us.

I have no problem with Facebook getting even more of my information, but it’s starting to reach a level that even, I’m beginning to question it. What about you?  Are you worried about any of these new changes?

The many Faces of Me

How many social media accounts do you have?  I’m not going to lie, I have more than I can sometimes handle.  I can often forget to update my Linkedin profile or go days without posting something to my Tumblr.  This is a problem and I’m not the only one.  There are hundreds of people like me who are on more than one social media channel and are trying to keep all of them updated, all the time.  No matter how many social media accounts you have though, you have to realize that you cannot have the same voice in all of your accounts if so WHERE IS THE VALUE for your followers.

First off, don’t connect your accounts.  It’s an easy way to get people to stop following you on one of them, or stop following you overall.  I even disconnected my Twitter from my linkedin profile after, a friend complained to me that her Linkedin feed was filled with my tweets.  Again, DO NOT CONNECT YOUR ACCOUNTS.  Unless it’s a blog post or something something from my tumblr account, that I want to share, I rarely post the same information on any of my accounts.

Let’s take a look at some of my social media accounts and how I use them.

FACEBOOK – My Facebook, just like yours, is filled with family members and old high school friends that seem to not go away, no matter how much I want them too.  On Facebook I sometimes get a tad more political and more personal.  If you want to know that side of me, follow me there.

Twitter - I love Twitter.  Being a social media junkie I’ve used Twitter to zero in on the key influencers in my field and career path.  I also use it to follow the news and stories that are important to me.  I’m often seen tweeting social media and marketing news, something I do not do on Facebook.

Linkedin - Linkedin is the place for my resume.  Connect with me on Linkedin to find out where I”m working and what I”m currently doing.

YouTube - I like editing and filming video.  It’s a small hobby, that I wish I had more time for.  Though, I don’t own a high-tec camera, I often find myself filming monologues for days or events that are important to me, using my phone or webcam.  If you want to see these events friend me on YouTube.

Tumblr - We all find cool video on the Internet.  Tumblr is my way of showcasing it to you guys in a shared fashion.  Like random funny videos that might be a tad bit inappropriate?  Follow me on Tumblr.

These are my many faces on the web.  I try to make sure that two of them aren’t the same.  Do you have multiple social media channels, if so how do you differentiate  them?

Two Deaths and a Blog Post

If you’ve been following me on Facebook or even on Twitter, you’re well aware that the last two weekends I’ve been dealing with some deaths in my family.  First my grandmother passed away on the 5th and then my parent’s dog Harley passed away in his sleep, on the 16th.  As you can imagine, it’s been a crazy month with tears shed here and there, but just like everything else we have to go on.

The human life, just like the life cycles of any product, is doomed to die and break down eventually, as sad as it to admit.  Look at Facebook, I would be more than a little scared due to the recent addition of Google+ to the social networking game field or hell Pandora should feel the same with with Spotify’s recent launch.

Death is a part of us as both humans and products.  It is our job as individuals to grow, be bold and live on.  Facebook and Pandora have been great products, and I’m sure they will still be around for the next few years but just like people, products break down.  This is nothing to bad to say either of these products, but after a while instead of being innovative products start to play the game safe and hesitantly.

Will Facebook and Pandora die quickly?  No, just like my Grandmother MJ or Harley, they will fight like hell to stay alive, but in the all we can do is watch.
