Happy Birthday, to Me!

So last week, October 26th, was my birthday and being a transplant, I found myself with no big plans for my birthday this year. NO BS Social MediaSSS I planned to do the same thing I did last year which was work my 9-6 job and then go to a marketing conference afterwards.  Boring for some, but hey I’m a transplant and what else is there to do for a  marketing professional such as myself..

Last year, I spent my 26th attending my first ever Raleigh SEO event, and so this year I decided I would top myself and attend Jason Fall’s Durham stop of the No Bull tour.

Now, if you are not aware of Jason Falls‘ he’s a social media speaker and consultant…and as I learned on October 26th one pretty awesome guy.

Now, I often argue with people the power of Twitter.  Some of you reading this probably arn’t on it and simply don’t think that you need another social media account, but that’s not me which is why on the morning of the 26th, I went into work like I always do and simply tweeted out “My Birthday present to myself this year, is I’m off to see Jason Falls.”  Jason shortly responded back with, I have a lot to live up to tonight and that was the end of the story…or so I thought.

So I went into Wednesday’s No Bull event, with not a thought in the word…well until Jason began his speech by calling me out and offered me a free copy of his book “No BullShit, Social Media.”  I froze, I literally felt like a deer in headlights or maybe what those on the wheel of fortune feel like.  I just couldn’t believe that I was called out by Jason Falls, a guy I believe to be a social media A lister.

Now this is no Peter Shankman story, but this was a birthday moment that I will never forgot and all of this shows the power of Social Media.  Now, this is not just the power of Twitter but the power of Social Media as a whole.  Jason Falls has made me a fan for life, what are you doing to enrich your customers and fan base?

Social Media…it’s everywhere.

Social media is being incorporated into almost everything that we do these days, including our favorite late night shows.  My girlfriend is huge fan of How I Met Your Mother and Monday night while I was watching it with her, CBS flashed their How I Met your Mother hashtag on the screen in the bottom left of the screen #HIMYM.

My girlfriend, had no idea what it meant but I instantly recognized the call for a hashtag. I was amazed at the extent that CBS was trying to get their show to trend.  This wasn’t CBS’ first attempt with HIMYM though, as this season’s premiere featured one of the main characters shouting out random hashtags in his dialogue, which I later found some of my twitter friends shouting out on twitter as well.

These examples are just another way of how many traditional mediums are combining with social media to help spread a marketing message to a customer.

Social media is now just popping up on TV but almost everywhere in life.  It seems like we literally can’t go out to eat, shop, or even go to the movies without being asked to friend, like, or even check-in with a company or service.

This might seem like a lot, but we need to remember, that this bombardment all part of the marketing mix though.  When we’re filled with marketing messages everywhere we look, marketers have to remind us about their page and their hashtag or else we would forget.

What do you think though?  Are there too many social messages out there and do these messages actually make you want to go out and like/share the company you are visiting.
